Time is right to alter Manchester United's tactical setup - Amorim declares.

Manchester United players ahead of a match
Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes was among multiple senior players to miss the Boxing Day victory against Newcastle United.

Head coach Ruben Amorim says that altering Man Utd's tactical system due to external noise would have been "the finish" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle, Amorim abandoned his customary back three setup with wing-backs and opted to field an standard back four shielded by two central midfielders.

He himself conceded this ultimately transformed into a six-man defensive block in the final phase as his side dug in for a victory - securing only their second clean sheet of the campaign.

Despite he once memorably remarked that even the Pope could force him to tweak his system, Amorim maintains the capacity to experiment with alternative setups has consistently been part of his plan.

Yet, he clarifies he could only make the switch when his team were doing sufficiently well - or else it would look as if he was giving in to outside pressure.

"When I came here the previous campaign, I recognized perhaps I didn't possess the players to perform effectively in that formation, but it was the start of a process," he commented.

"The goal was to establish an style. Today is a different moment. We are missing a full complement of players, and we need be flexible, so they comprehend why we are switching things up.

"The change isn't because of the influence of journalists, or the fans.

"Whenever the press discuss altering the formation constantly, I cannot change because the squad will believe I'm altering things because of external voices and I think that is the downfall for the coach.

"Once we are performing strongly in our system, then is the moment to change.

"We are going to become a more complete team because when all the players return, we are not going to play with three defenders exclusively."

Availability Issues Persist

Having only two wins in their last eight outings prior to defeating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is right to claim his team have been in good form.

He is, though, working with a injury-ravaged roster, with multiple first-team players already confirmed absent for the forthcoming fixture against struggling Wolves.

That number will rise if playmaker Mason Mount is unable to shake off the knock that led to his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is a key name who will miss the Wolves match, even though he is understood to be pushing his boss to let him to return after his hamstring problem.

"Fernandes is already saying he needs to train," said Amorim. "However there is absolutely no possibility he is going to feature against Wolves. No chance. That's definitive."

The Captain's Role Is Unwavering

However, the 31-year-old will almost certainly continue to be a prominent presence, as while most unavailable players watch matches from a private box, Fernandes was spotted monitoring the warm-ups from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his captain to carry on providing insight.

"The guy is a leader," he stated. "He must not be that guy that when he is not playing, he's silent and offering advice. He's constantly vocal. That is the reason he's the skipper.

"There are bad things at times - his mannerisms he moves his arms - but he has a lot of strengths. After he recovers, he goes to observe the rest of the squad practicing. There are a many aspects you don't see.

"I don't know if he wants my position or not, but he's a leader. The guy is a leader."

Recovery Timeline for Key Players

While the precise timeline for the captain's comeback - and that of other unavailable players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unclear, before the conclusion of January, the club will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international competition.
